$100 a pack? Whatever it takes

Cigarette Price

New Zealand’s Prime Minister, John Key, has said that a huge hike in the retail prices of cigarettes could boost the black market, according to a 3 News story.

Key was commenting on a New Zealand Institute of Economic Research’s suggestion that the government raise the average cigarette price to NZ$60 per pack in 2013 and every year thereafter so that the price reached NZ$100 by 2020.

The rise in retail prices was seen as part of the effort that would be needed to achieve the goal of making the country smoke-free by 2025.
