Palm Beach School Board votes to ban smoking on all school properties

The Palm Beach County School Board voted Wednesday night to make the school district completely tobacco-free. The new policy will take effect January 2, 2012.

Currently, district policy allows adults to smoke outdoors at school campuses and other district properties if they are at least 50 feet away from a building exit.

The new rule bans all smoking by anyone, including parents and employees on any district-owned property or school-sanctioned event.

According to the school district, they will work with the union when it comes to punishment. As for parents, they would asked to leave school property.

At least one major public school district, Orange County Schools in the Orlando area, has already enforced a ban on smoking.
