Pfizer’s Smoking Cessation Aid Chantix

Pharmaceutical company Pfizer has launched a new drug varenicline (brand name – Chantix), designed to facilitate smoking cessation. There is no desire to return to smoking because of fear of a new course of therapy of this disease.

The new drug was released for sale in 2006 and quickly gained popularity in many countries around the world. Since the start of sales, the pills for smoking cessation were taken by 9 million people in the U.S. and Europe. In 2007 smoking pill won a Galen Prize, often called as Nobel Prize in medicine.

The effectiveness of an innovative drug for the treatment of nicotine dependence has already been proven by the experience of 9 million people in the U.S. and Europe. The drug was registered in 80 countries. Tablets for smoking cessation, interacting with nicotinic receptors instead of nicotine, not only block the action of nicotine, so people will not enjoy it at the time of smoking, but also stimulate the nicotinic receptors, which significantly reduces symptoms of quitting.

Food and Drug Administration, USA, reported that one of the most dangerous drugs is Varenicline, a drug that is recommended to facilitate smoking cessation.

In the U.S., Varenicline is registered under the name Chantix and applied since 2006. On November 20, 2007 FDA informed the public about the risk of developing mental disorders due to use of varenicline, which were manifested by changes in behavior, agitation, depression, suicide attempts. In addition, varenicline may cause convulsions and loss of consciousness, possibly as a result of sudden cardiac arrhythmia. These violations may occur after discontinuation of the drug. Only in the USA, 112 deaths and 3325 serious complications were recorded during two years of using of this drug.

In connection with these data, on February 1, 2008 FDA banned the use of varenicline to people associated with the operator performance and once again informed about the possible negative consequences of intake of varenicline.

It was only in early August 2009, the Federal Monitor Center for Drug Safety issued warnings and instructions for use of varenicline (Chantix) in Russia.
