STROKE: DOCTOR TURNS PATIENT

Some brief overview of book

I was a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist who became a stroke patient. As is normal after a stroke, I was anxious as to what would become of me. I addressed that anxiety by focusing on my rehabilitation and getting back to my 'normal life'as a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist.

That became the proxy for normalcy and my obsession throughout the period of rehabilitation. It was only after returning to work that I began to re-evaluate my life and my priorities. The truth is there is really no going back to 'normal life' after a stroke such as the one that I had.

I have had to adapt to the residual effects and limitations that the stroke caused. I have had to make changes to the physical, social and emotional aspects of my life. This book is to share a personal account of what I faced and did when I was in the abyss of despair.

This book has served for me to review what I went through. It has been an examination of my own self as I was before the stroke, during my period of recovery and what I have become thereafter. Writing this book has been an emotional journey that gave me many moments of sadness and many more moments of immense joy.

Writing the book has been cathartic. The open expression of what I have been through has provided me great relief from a host of repressed emotions.
