Wayland Considers New Tobacco Regulations


The Board of Health in Wayland, Massachusetts, this week will organize public hearing on tobacco regulations in the city. The hearing will take placeĀ  in the Wayland Town Building, found at 41 Cochituate Road.

Wayland is going to cancel the existing local tobacco control regulations and adopt a couple of stronger updated regulations. The talk is about Tobacco Sales Regulation that includes Nicotine Delivery Products, and Secondhand Smoke Regulation that is going to be updated.

In case town of Wayland adopts new modifications in tobacco control laws, it will join 60 other communities in Massachusetts which do promote new regulatory prohibitions and guidance for tobacco sales.

50 years ago the U.S. Surgeon General released his report on smoking effects on the body. The report changed people’s attitude towards smoking in the entire world. In the course of 50 years the humanity did a lot in order to prevent smoking related diseases. But still more needs to be done.

Data on tobacco use by Office of the Surgeon General, Centers of Disease Control, American Journal of Public Health, National Institutes of Health demonstrates that the use of tobacco is increased among youth.

Most popular product among young smokers is e-cigarettes due to manufacturers claims about its safety and no negative effects on the body. However, it is only ads to make people buy them, The true is far from these claims, and more and more scientists talk about dangers of e-cigarettes use. These days e-cigarettes are being studied and require more researches.

Having these concerns in mind, the Board of Health proposed to include e-cigarettes into new tobacco control regulations. Also they proposed to increase miminum age to buy cigarettes online to 21, because most people start smoking befire this age. The changes also touch cigars.
